Hodson Bay Celtic Football Club

Thursday 17th January 2019 Futsal Finals Night
Hodson Bay Boys are the 2019 Futsal Champions bringing the Stacey Cup home for the first time since 2011, a night to remember.

Futsal Fever:
There is nothing like the buzz generated from the ADSL Futsal competition held annually in the AIT. The AIT's Count John McCormack Sports Hall is the ideal venue for this tournament with its tiered seating plan and the music generating an atmosphere with a crescendo of noise, fun and excitement that players never forget.
Thanks to AIT Sport for making finals night available globally and Gordon Brett and Paul Osam for their excellent commentary.
Finally a massive Thanks to the ADSL and the Stacey family for their continued commitment and support in hosting this competition.
Hodson Bay entered five teams in the competition with everyone involved thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Now to the Futsal:
This was going to be tough.
Eight great teams from AC Celtic, Ballinasloe, St Francis x2, St Jospeh’s, Temple Villa x2 and of course Hodson Bay competing for the Stacy Cup.
In their opening group game vs. Ballinasloe the boys started strongly with Cathal and Patrick having great chances. Ballinasloe too looked dangerous especially with their fast breaks. Everyone in attendance were just about to mark the score as 0-0 in their programs but the boys had different ideas and pushed hard for the winner. Cathal had a brilliant effort saved by the keeper only for Patrick to pounce and slam home the rebound with just four seconds remaining on the traditional "Countdown Clock". A fantastic start for the boys and an important opening victory.
The boys second group game was AC Celtic, again the lads started well with Rocket setting up Patrick for an early goal. Rocket was again involved in setting up Cathal to secure a 2-0 win with a great finish.
The third and final group game was against Temple Villa and whilst the lads were on top they couldn’t find a breakthrough against an organised young brave side, who ended up the only side not to concede to these Hodson Bay lads in their 12 games.
Semi-Final vs St. Josephs - this turned out to be an epic battle.
St Josephs started strongly with Dan pulling strings in the middle, the boys however adjusted before being rocked going behind to Dan's long-range shot which slipped by the excellent Paul in goals for the bay. This was to really test the boys credentials but they responded and indeed Cathal was unfortunate not to score an equaliser when his goal was disallowed. Just before half time however the game changed when Rocket turned and ran through on goal, with what seemed like the whole of the AIT chasing him down he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. Hodson Bay now had the bit between the teeth and kept up the pressure with the winner following soon after when Jamie set up Patrick who finished at the second attempt. There weren’t many clear-cut chances after that and a huge roar followed at the full time whistle - the Hodson Bay lads were in the final.
THE FINAL vs. Ballinasloe
In what was a repeat of their opening game of the evening Hodson Bay produced what can only be described as a blistering start full of quality and speed. After eight seconds the boys took the lead when Rocket volleyed the ball to the back of the net. Two minutes later the Rocket was on hand to set up Cathal who produced a thundering shot to make the score 2-0 with just minutes gone. Indeed the pattern of this frenetic opening period was to continue with the boys having plenty of chances to extend their lead with fantastic fast precise flowing football. The boys however were to be denied courtesy of some brave defending and brilliant goalkeeping. Ballinasloe to their credit fought back hard in an attempt to score the goal that'd get them back into the game but the boys defence stood firm, keeping their tenth clean sheet in their twelve competition games.
The Cup was heading back to Ballybay - Yippee 🎉

The Boys:
1) Paul O'Sullivan was fantastic throughout and his awareness and razor like saves were brilliant. Keeping 10 clean sheets in 12 games in Futsal is some achievement.
2) Rian Fallon at the back was a rock, fantastic in the tackle, demonstrating great awareness with first class distribution.
3) Dylan Dennehy also played a crucial role at the back. Superb in the tackle, with unreal vision and distribution using both feet, an important attribute in this tight fast game.
4) Ben Ward played very well and lifted his game in each game producing a masterclass in the final denying his opponents time and space producing many vital blocks throughout the evening.
5) Jamie Nicholson the skipper who just doesn't know when he's beaten. A fantastic engine getting up and down the hall all evening.
6) Cathal Ferry was brilliant and possesses a magical left foot. Cathal combined this dangerous weapon (best demonstrated by his two powerful goals) with super link up play all evening.
7) Patrick Collins is a class act and was extremely lively all evening. Patrick links the play brilliantly and has fantastic energy, chipping in with three vital goals, two winners in tight games.
8 ) Conor ROCKET Casey - what can be said about the rocket except that he's brilliant and is an absolute nightmare to mark. Rocket linked the play throughout the evening with fast, precise passing creating opportunities. Conor's goals in the semi-final and final got the boys over the line.

Hodson Bay Boys Record:
Games: played 12 (10 wins and 2 draws)
Goals: 32 goals scored and 2 conceded

Message from the Coach:
It takes a squad with all of the capabilities displayed by the boys to succeed in Futsal and these eight boys were awesome.

Massive Congratulations to our U12's managers Enda and Paul, who deserve huge credit they were also fortunate to have a son playing last night.
Whilst I didn’t have a son playing on the evening, it did feel like I'd eight sons playing 😊
